So You Think You Can Dance: the top 4's last chance to impress

First up is a hip-hop groutine that's a big improvement than the one they did last week. Of the boys, Ben is the better dancer; it's harder to say which girl is superior, though I think it's Talia by a hair.

Nat introduces the judges: Jason greets us with one of his customary D-bag sideways peace signs, while Bonnie babbles some advice about how the dancers should be "the brilliant four that you are". Whatever that means.

TALIA + CHARLIE

They dance... a contemporary routine about a couple breaking up at a train station. Talia is great at the emotional stuff — get her a job on Neighbours, stat! — but Charlie struggles to be romantic, as usual. Aside from that, it's impressive. The judges go ga-ga.

But more importantly... I'm pretty sure Talia is actually crying by the end, which seems pretty cheeseball to me.

TALIA + BEN

They dance... Talia's back for an Argentinean tango. I dig the tango, and this one is suitably spicy. Whether or not you like Talia, you have to admit she has star quality up there onstage. Jason decrees that her intensity overwhelmed Ben's, which is true, though Ben was still really good.

But more importantly... The camera briefly cuts to Dr Karl from Neighbours (aka Alan Fletcher) sitting in the audience. I suspect he's there to offer Talia a role, perhaps as a missing Kennedy daughter.

AMY + BEN

They dance... This is the first dud of the night: it's lyrical hip-hop where they play an ice princess and prince. Um, okay. Weird set-up aside, their unison is off and the emotions never come through. It's... boring. The audience boos Jason when he says the dance didn't grab him or go anywhere, even though he's spot on.

But more importantly... In her verdict, Bonnie says she believed the story behind the dance. Of course Bonnie, of all people, would be convinced by a nonsensical story about ice royalty.

AMY + CHARLIE

They dance... the samba, teaming up for the first time ever. This routine is a much better showcase for Amy: it's fun, quirky, and light — none of that laid-on emotional crap. Bonnie's verdict is utter nonsense, even by her standards: she babbles on for so long that when she's done she's out of breath.

But more importantly... The cutest bit of the routine is a stunning quick-change: Amy disappears behind a curtain wearing a tight black dress, then emerges a second later in a pink, completely different dress! It's like watching a magic show.

THE BOYS

They dance... a tribute to the great Gene Kelly, playing mirror images of each other. This number is so breezy and cute (and hilariously gay). The judges reckon Ben is a more effortless dancer, though Jason adds Charlie has longer line. I still say Ben trumps Charlie.

But more importantly... during the verdict, Ben goes off on a lengthy tangent about how amazing Charlie is to work with, and Charlie reciprocates the compliment. Geez, get a room, you two.

THE GIRLS

They dance... a contemporary number, each wearing one ballet shoe and one stiletto. I think that sounds incredibly difficult, but they make it look easy — and sexy, too. The judges run over with praise; Jason says they're the strongest and most versatile dancers in the contest. Sounds like he's hoping for a female final two.

But more importantly... both these girls are so amazingly flexible. There are Barbie dolls out there less bendy than Amy and Talia.

SOLOS

After the final four each do a solo routine, the judges offer their feedback one more time... but they struggle to declare a favourite. I have to agree it's tough to say who's going to win next week. I reckon Talia will be in the top two, and — based on the screams he earned from the crowd tonight — Charlie will join her there.
