So You Think You Can Dance: the top 8 are gr8!

The boys go out to the ball game
The boys go out to the ball game

At two hours long, this episode is more bloated than all The Biggest Loser contestants combined. So let's jump in, shall we?

First up: Penny is out of the competition. Shock! A stress fracture on her rib has forced her to quit, leading into a very lengthy segment where the show tries to convince us that Penny is the Greatest Australian Hero. I feel bad for Penny — it sucks she's come so far only to have to leave — but seriously.

Anyway, Penny is gone, so Gianne is back in. Silver lining!

THE BOYS

This is new: the boys team up for a group routine, dressing as baseball players for a Broadway number. The judges — including Dance favourite Jason Gilkison — agree on two things: one, Tim's passion makes up for his technical failings; two, Ben was the best of the bunch. Agreed.

AMY + TIM

They dance... a light, quirky contemporary routine, dressed as schoolkids in detentions, and later return to the stage for a super-awesome number set to 'Ease on Down the Road' from The Wiz, in costume as Dorothy and the Scarecrow. Hee!

But more importantly... Amy is, without a doubt, completely awesome. (Sidenote: am I the only one who's noticed her undies are always showing?) But you know what? I reckon Tim outdances her in their second routine. Jason declares that it's his favourite of the night, and I think he's right.

TALIA + BEN

They dance... hip-hop, playing a diva and her sexy servant. Talia works it, but Ben always looks a bit goofy in this genre. Their second dance is an improvement: a quickstep/samba combo so sexy that it almost sets the stage on fire.

But more importantly... During the verdict for the second routine, some bonehead in the audience screams out "Ooh aah, Talia". Uh oh. Is this the birth of another obnoxious catchphrase? And right after we finally got rid of the daft "Embrace the Penny". (And don't even get me started on Jason's stupid "Loved it loved it loved it loved it loved it" thing.)

GIANNE + CHARLIE

They dance... Disco! I'm chuffed Gianne got to come back for this one, because she rocks the Farrah hair. (Also, how boring would it've been if we'd had to sit through another round of Penny and Charlie?) Their second number is "monster hip-hop", whatever that is, and I think it's crazy and dreadful but the judges all love it. Meh.

But more importantly... I can't help but notice that Gianne and Charlie's routines both look a little, er, unpolished. However, Jason steps in to let us all know they had barely two days to rehearse together after Penny's exit. I get tired just playing Xbox, so I hate to think how exhausted they must be by now.

KAT + BJ

They dance... foxtrot to The Godfather soundtrack: BJ (hee, "BJ") is the Don, Kat is a grieving widow. This routine is my favourite of the night: it's passionate and intense and dreamy. Later, they return for a "circus-inspired" jazz number — it's neat, but pales in comparison to their first dance.

But more importantly... Gilkison notes it's "the best foxtrot he's ever seen", but then spoils it by adding "... in this competition". Ha, burned. And, shockingly, Bonnie's critique of this routine is completely intelligible. For the first time ever, she makes perfect sense. I'd be more impressed if she didn't spent the rest of the episode talking rubbish.

THE GIRLS

Skank alert: the girls team up for "dance hall hip-hop". I don't know what dance hall hip-hop is, but apparently it involves shakin' yo booty onstage for 90 seconds. Seriously: this is the raunchiest (my inner feminist wants to add "most objectifying") routine on this show ever. Avert your eyes, children! A disappointed Matt and Jason agree that it's "too hoochie" for their tastes. Agreed.

It's tough to pick who's out, but I'm going to hazard a guess that Gianne, Kat, Tim and BJ will all land in the bottom four.

What are your elimination predictions? Who outdanced who tonight? Have your say in the comments!

Onya Harriet, i agree, I was also wondering where the review is. I only watch SYTYCD while channel surfing, because i know Sam will cut out the waffle and wrap up the highlights in a way she only can!
Where is the review for Monday's show, Sam? It is way more entertaiing then the show itself....
There routine wasnt her as a grieving widow. they were lovers and she betrayed the family so she had to go. Hence the reason B J snapped her neck at the end. IT was even said in the package before, so maybe you should watch the show properly. I think the Dance Hall routine was good, wasnt raunchy. If they were in bikinis it would of been but they weer covered. I think Amy was a clear stand out in that routine. The boys routine was boring. Best routine of the night Amy and Tim's MJ recreation. My opinion on who should of went Kat and Ben
I'm glad Penny is out of the competiton. She pulls the most revolting face when she laughs. It gets quite annoying to watch. Definitely need a new host though!! I really enjoyed watching all the dances on Sunday. They all did a great job!!
dont blame the girls for the routine its not their fault they didn't make it up. you rock girls!
This is the last time i'm gunna say this. STOP SAYING HEHE B.J ITS NOT FUNNY WHATS FUNNY ABOUT IT?
This show would be much better with a descent host, its time Natalie Bassingthwaite went missing. Natalie has no personality and nothing to say unless its about her... Please evict her now!!!!
the girls routine, even though a tad raunchy, i think did well. Of course the guys would love it, but wasnt TOO raunchy in my mind. i sat there thinking "wow, it would be cool to learn how to dance like that... just to know how." I loved the boys routine, their outfits were super cute!! my favourite dancers were talia and ben though, whoever is with talia cant do wrong i think. so as long as they arent in the bottom four i'll be one happy chappy! oh, and if BJ wasnt, thatd be nice too. that boy is smokin' !!
Seriously, these are amazing dancers and while they can't be faulted for their talent, the actual routine was yeah, reduced to rump shaking pretty much. Better, cleverer ways to bring hotness and sexy back.
this is just another routine. the judges were too *** the girls who only danced what they were taught. The show is all about diff styles of dance and learning new routines. I loved it, gives everybody a chance to appreciate all styles of dancing. They did a great job with what they had been given.
