So You Think You Can Dance: your votes boot Gianne and Loredo from the top 10

Gianne
Gianne dances for her life
Ten
Nat Bass opens the show by telling us that for the first time this season, it's not the judges who decide who goes home — it's our votes. And by "our votes" she really means "your votes", since I haven't voted in a reality TV competition since about 2005.

This week's groutine has a Fame vibe: the top 10 are decked out in 1970s-style clothes, dancing an upbeat disco-ish routine. It is awesomely campy, and about as trippy as you'd expect a '70s-themed dance to be.

The judges look hilariously bored by the whole thing, even though Bonnie says it reminds her of her youth. Jason (whose peace sign greeting has returned with ridiculous vengeance) and Nat spend the entire first five minutes of the show flirting their pants off. Jeez, get a room, you two.

But here's the thing: if it's Australia's votes that now decide who goes home... what is the point of the judges? They don't really serve a purpose anymore, other than to try and manipulate the outcome of the vote.

THE VAGUELY RACIST BOTTOM 4

Nat reveals the bottom four: it's Gianne and Kat, and Tim and Loredo. Um, maybe it's politically incorrect or whatever to point this out, but... I can't help but notice that all the non-white contestants who remain in the competition have been voted into the top three. Coincidence? Or has Australia's racist undercurrent been exposed?

The Fray comes onstage to perform their deadly dull new single, but there are more interesting things that need to be said: Rachel from Melbourne rightly points out that I forgot to snicker inappropriately at BJ's nickname in my recap of the top 10's performances. Allow me to rectify the situation:

HEE, "BJ"!

This will never happen again.

DANCING FOR THEIR LIVES

Again, this is another segment that has been rendered useless — now that the judges are no longer calling the shots, what is the point of the life-dances? Nat tries to say it's to remind us why we fell in love with these dancers in the first place, but I ain't buying it.

• Gianne is so vibrant and fiery onstage. It'll be a real blow to the competition if she goes.

• Kat is admittedly adorable — the phrase "pocket rocket" was invented to describe her. Still, if the judges were still in control I suspect she'd be out tonight.

• Tim is super-smooth. His routine isn't the greatest thing I've ever seen, but it does show why he's made it so far in the competition.

• Loredo dances shirtless, which didn't save Danny last week. His dancing can't be faulted, but honestly, I'm a little over him.

THE DANCE DREAM ENDS FOR...

Gianne and Loredo are out. It's a darn shame that Gianne has left — miss her already — though I think Australia made the right decision to boot Loredo. She accepts her elimination with a gracious smile, while he looks decidedly more bummed out.

Bonnie pretends to cry about the eliminations, which: puh-lease. I've seen crocodiles spill more convincing tears.

So: did Australia make the right decision? Do Australia's votes really make the judges pointless? And did the bottom four also seem kind of possibly racist to you? Have your say in the comments!

I love SYTYCD, but I love you more Sam. Your articles are spot on. I don't go a week without reading your awesome sarcastic comments, all tongue in cheek of course. Keep up the good work - someone out there needs to point out how useless the judges are, especially Bonnie (the mute button is especially useful when it comes to her), and to say it like it is when one of the "favourites" dances horribly but doesn't get any negative feedback. It's a bit of a rort. Bring on the US season!!
It's "Hee, "B.J." , not "He He B.J." I find it pretty funny.
i agree with kate and cuncuk who eva writes these SYTYCD articales are seriously unhappy and DO NOT know wat they are talking 'bout- SYTYCD is tha BESTT!!
you're funny, i look forward to reading this at work haha
I love reading your updates. I love the show and I get to experience it all again the next day. That is what reality TV is about...we all become experts in our own right by praising and sniggering at the talent.
im sick of reading your crap all you do it lie to put people down. get a real job.
Stop saying he he B.J, its not funny. You don't know wat ur talkin bout how did u get this job writing this? TIMOMATIC ALL THE WAY!
she was awsome, she is the ultamite '*** shaker' , but i think her hip hop routine failed , ... she kicks *** in everything elsE, mabey it was bad partnership (with loredo)... anyway others who have failed miserably with their other routines..and are still on the show,.. and what about Danny? , he was awsome i think he didnt have enough time to shine, definetly kicked *** over tim..looked like an ameture when tim was dancing the waltz.. I CANT STAND THE BALERINA! , - YES SHE IS A GREAT DANCER , BUT THE LOOK ON HER FACE HAS BEEN CHANGING EVER SO GRADUALLY OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS , THAT, WHAT DO YOU SAY "CANT BE TRUSTED" LOOK...
it was incredibly racist but i think its not so much australia that is racist, its more so the judges. looking back on sunday night gianne, loredo and tim were the only ones who got incredibly negative feedback. yet everyone else got incredibly positive feedback. loredo and gianne didnt have a chance which is pretty funny seeing as they probably had the most talent out of all the remaining dancers. whats to bet tim goes next week.
i neva really liked gianne i think australia got it right. this guy sam who does this review is a *** he alway brags on bout it n makes the show look bad where its a gd show if you dont like reviewin it THEN GET SOMEONE ELSE TO DO IT!
