So You Think You Can Dance: are the top 10 really the best dancers in the country?

Moments before coming onstage tonight, Nat Bass gets the bottom of her sparkly dress tangled up in a dead ostrich. At least, that's what it looks like.

Our judges are chuffed that, from this week onward, they no longer have to choose who goes home. I don't know why they're so excited, given that they've more or less been rendered useless now. Bonnie adds that "Someone's going to win", and I think it's wonderful that after all this time she's finally figured out how reality TV competitions work.

Tonight the top 10 are shaken up into new pairings, which is... weird. It reminds me of being a kid and watching those strange crossover episodes where the Ninja Turtles teamed up with the Care Bears to fight drugs.

AMY + BJ

They dance... a hip-hop routine, dressed in robot space warrior garbage bags. Amy even has Princess Leia hair-buns. Later, they return to the stage for an impressive lyrical number that the judges agree is the best dance they've seen all night.

But more importantly... these two have fantastic chemistry, which Bonnie revels in because she's keen to see a behind-the-scenes romance. Amy describes BJ as "her new toy". Kinky! If they started making out onstage, I would not bat an eyelid.

GIANNE + LOREDO

They dance... A gangster-themed contemporary routine around a table. Their second dance is a hip-hop number that is a bit of a mess — they do their best, but they just don't gel with the choreography. Blah.

But more importantly... Loredo stands up for himself when Jason disses their second dance, which hardly ever happens on this show — the dancers are usually totally lambs. Unfortunately, when Loredo says his body doesn't suit the choreography, he just comes off a whiner who's making excuses for himself. Jason rightly retorts that lack of versatility is no excuse in this stage of the competition.

TALIA + CHARLIE

They dance... an impossibly cute quickstep choreographed by the ever-present Jason Gilkison, but, their most notable appearance is the "abstract" contemporary routine they do later in the night. It's bizarre and disturbing but... also kind of neat!

But more importantly... it's all about Charlie tonight: he almost trips over at the start of the quickstep. Despite the error, he still has at least one fan: Nat Bass, who openly lusts over his "big muscles". Which is crazy, because Charlie doesn't even have big muscles. Nat has a cru-ush!

PENNY + BEN

They dance... a nourish, immensely fun jazz number where she shoots him, then dances with his corpse Weekend at Bernie's-style. Hee! Later, they dress up as a bride and groom for a lovely foxtrot (also choreographed by Gilkison).

But more importantly... Penny stumbles this week. She's not as awesome as Ben, especially in their first routine where she struggles to convincingly play a jilted lover. Jason and Matt savage her for the first time, but Bonnie is clearly desperate to save her: she gives an epic lecture about how Penny's personality is too huge and "perfect" for her to play a character. Shut up, Bonnie.

KAT + TIM

They dance... firstly a tribal samba which is totally ruined by their outrageous costumes (black-and-white unitards) and Kat's bright red Raggedy Anne wig. It's distracting. They save themselves with their second routine: a jazz number where she's Little Red Riding Hood and he's the Big Bad Wolf. It's cute without being great — these two didn't get the strongest choreography this week.

But more importantly... Bonnie's feedback to these two is completely incomprehensible, to the point where Jason declares that everything Bonnie says to Kat and Tim is "so wrong". Actually, pretty much everything Bonnie says to everyone tonight is incoherent. Even Paula Abdul, the Queen of Crazy Reality TV Judges, would look at Bonnie and be all, "She's not making any sense!"

WHO WILL GO?

It's a tough call, because the top 10 are all pretty awesome, but here's my bottom three picks: Tim, Loredo and Ben for the boys; Kat, Gianne and Penny for the girls.

Gianne and Loredo deserved to go, but i would of been happy to see Kat go. I would of been happy to see her go first! She isnt that great of a dancer. And doesnt deserve to be where she is. She got in based on a sob story, and has continued on because Jason loves her and because of her age and cuteness. Give it up already Kat! But dont be suprised if she wins cause of her age. GO TALIA!

Amy and Ben should go. It's their time. This will leave the most interesting and talented dancers left to form the top 8. Come on Australia it's up to us now!!! My pick for top 8 girls Penny Talia Gianne Kat and boys Charlie Loredo *** & Timomatic

i've just gotten into the habit of muting the tv when it's bonnie's turn to speak, it drives me nuts. matt's mannerisms are likeable, and jason is at least bearable.

this week's weak performances by laredo and Timo prove that the wrong guy was cut last week. Having said that, agree 100% that Bonnie adds nothing of value to the show, nada... she was inomprehensible last night. And... natalie B... please open your mouth .move your lips, do something to prove you are not a ventriloquist standing on that stage (or an overdressed and overpaid ventriloquist's dummy).

tend to agree with the first poster. While they are talented these people are just the 10 favourites of the judges out of those that started. Next year it will be another 10 and so on. Like Idol and other such things there are just as many talented people who didnt enter the competition and work their way to the top.

I just walk away when the judges comments are on - I can't understand the point of Bonnie either! If they are going to have a useless judge at least have someone with a bit of personality like Mary Murphy! Can't stand Penny's laugh and facial expressions! Kat looked terrible with that wig. i think the costume dept have the say on the costumes (see Style in the video section on SYTYCD website) but I have heard someone say something that sounded like choreographer had a say or at least suggestion.

Who's idea was it to get Bonnie on the show? She's so painful to watch, and listen to, with the most annoying voice and accent, and she can't coherently describe the dancers when she's meant to be an expert on the subject! Everyone is "... soooo.... soooo... good. Oh, oh,.... soooo... wow... I loved it!" She needs a bigger vocabulary.

I'm afraid the top 10 dancers in the Country are already contracted with Dance Companies around the world!!!!!!! This the top 10 Favourite Dancers (who auditioned). On the bright side it is good to see dance in everyones lounge room!!!!!!!!

holy moly Penny....Ben outdanced her!!
