"'It was my job to be seen and not heard" - Nicole reveals Tom Cruise marriage pain

 7/11/2008 8:10:00 AM, CelebrityFIX Prev Next Nicole Kidman has revealed that she felt like she lived in Tom Cruise's shadow for the ten years they were married.

The 41-year-old, who has said little about her marriage to the high-profile Scientologist since their divorce in 2001, said that her self-esteem suffered while she was Mrs. Tom Cruise.

"I felt I became a star only by association," she told Glamour magazine.

"I didn't think [my early movies] were very good, which is why I would always cower in the background.

"I thought, I don't deserve to be here. We would go to the Oscars and I would think, 'I'm here to support him'.

"I felt it was my job to put on a beautiful dress and to be seen and not heard."

Nicole met Tom when making flick Days Of Thunder when Nic was just 22. Now married to Keith Urban and mum to four-month-old Sunday Rose, she says she's on top of the world.

"I'm in a place of gratitude and humility," she said. "I touch wood every day. The journey of life - we all go through it.

"You have love, you lose love, you find new love. To have love again is a beautiful thing."

I smile at this headline - when you read the text you understand that it is a sensationalized "grab" for attention. Obviously Nicole loved Tom and visa versa......and neither have stopped having a different love for each other over passing years. You can't marry someone and be with them for a long time (especially when children are involved) then just treat them (or speak of them) like they never mattered - that person will always matter if the relationship was basically good, and I don't see any evidence that it was otherwise. More people should enjoy a good relationship with past loves - it will never diminish a new one, just show that you are capable of loving and caring for someone beyond 5 minutes. Old loves are very prescious, and don't diminish new ones, they just add something to another relationship that you didn't have before. More love.....stop judging and start loving, you'll feel better.
She is such an extraodinary woman with a beautiful soul. I respect her deeply. Nicole seems really content and very optimistic. I wish her and Keith the very best.
I think that tom cruise is the wierdest person alive. He thinks he is so great (in his own mind) Good on Nicole for finding her own life and following on with such great respect for herself and her children to not do the tell all. Katie is still so young and will learn the hard way of his weirdness. Lyn
no we are NOT sick of you nicole. great australian actress who is where she is because of her true blue australian personality- tom cruise may have made an impact on her career but she is where she is today because she is a good actress and good person. she is bein a mother - like every other woman who has a career as well as children its hard for her but we only hear about nicole through the media who only provide us with drama and false information. be proud of who you are nicole coz we sure are.
As you can see he is doing the same thing to his wife. As he did with our Nic. But hey they were together for ten years and 2 before they got married. That is pretty cool in Hollywood.But is not good so many people get hitched then breakup.Under 10 years.So that is not good. So many break ups.We sould see the right things not the wrong things they are both happy now so thats great.I think they would of lasted if he was not in that cult.
To all the ppl who are saying Nicole only got anywhere because of Tom, is proberly true, But she did get the Oscar AFTER they had been split up for 2 years. So he may have helped her launch her carrer but he didn't do too well when they were together, as Nicole has stated before Tom told her wat roles she had to take. And she never got an oscar for those roles, she got it for a movie she herself chose to do.
Nicole is a talented actress in her own right, although in the beginning I can understand why she felt like an accessory on his arm. Personally, after Tom split with Nicole, I boycotted ALL his movies at the cinema, and still do. I think she's far better off without him and his couch-jumping antics. (Even though that was for Katie). His behaviour has been strange. And as for the Scientology, don't even get me started. I'm glad Nicole is so happy without him now. She deserves happiness.
hardly a surprise the sick and pathetic control freak is doing exactly the same thing to katie holmes now- that girl looks extremely sad and 10 years older than she really is- in toms world everything is about tom hes a sterotypical narsisist and frighteningly mentally ill- divorcing him was best thing that ever happend to nicole- the best thing that could happen to tom is getting locked up in loony bin- its his kids i feel for-specially the poor adopted ones he longer has any interest in but still wants to control. The context of what Nicole is saying here has been lost. She is saying that when she was married to Tom, she didn't feel like she was good enough, or at least, as good as he was. Now, she, like many women, who grow up and grow into their skins and feel more comfortable, she feels more confident in herself. It has more to do with her own psyche than any other person. Keith or Tom.
I reckon there's a bit of truth to Nicole saying she was to be seen and not heard and being unhappy married to Tom. For example if you notice in most pictures of Nic & Tom, she is standing behind him and he has his big nose out in front posing for the cameras! Then check out pics of Nic and Keith...he always puts her out in front or by his side! And just notice the body language too! Am I the only female who never liked Tom Cruise?! I think he's a self centred freak and totally up himself! Its obvious that Katie's in the same boat! Can't wait until she decides to set sail too! And so what if Nic's had work done!! Is she the only one?? No! So has half of Hollywood! If you've got the $$$ to get work done...go for it I say! If you're happy within yourself then everything else falls into place around you. Good on ya Nic - glad you finally found peace and happiness! And hey....Keith is a bit of alright too!
