In a CBS Sunday Morning interview to be aired Feb 10 in the US, John has confronted his demons with a refreshing bit of candour, as these leaked titbits reveal.
"It's very liberating when you finally realise it's impossible to make everyone like you," he said in the interview. "I wanted everybody to like me. I thought I was one shuck and jive away in every direction."
It didn't stop him mistreating the women he was closest to, though. "I was just a jerk," he admitted.
John has previously criticised his ex, Taylor Swift, for writing 'Dear John', a song he believes is about their failed romance.
"It made me feel terrible because I didn't deserve it," John told Rolling Stone in June 2012.
"['Dear John' is] cheap songwriting," he said. "It's abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, 'Wait til he gets a load of this!' That's bulls---."
Now, with John's frank admission of poor boyfriend behaviour, it sounds like maybe he had it coming after all.
