Alex Karras, Blazing Saddles' Mongo, dies aged 77

Athlete-turned-actor Alex Karras has died of kidney failure, aged 77.

Karras played in the NFL from 1958 to 1970, but is best known for his starring role as Mongo in director Mel Brooks' 1974 comedy Blazing Saddles.

He went on to build a name for himself as an actor, on both the big and small screens, with a six-year stint as George Papadapolis on the 80s sitcom, Webster.

He is survived by his wife Susan Clark, their daughter and five children from a prrevious marriage.
