Two-and-a-half years since her split from ex Stuart Townsend, the 37-year-old Snow White and the Huntsman actress, who adopted baby Jackson from South Africa in May, is said to be getting cosy with the 41-year-old sitcom star after being introduced by mutual friends earlier this year.
A source close to the Oscar-winning actress told Daily Mail that the pair "get along incredibly well".
"They started off as friends but things are blossoming between them," the source claimed.
"Eric is down-to-earth and funny and Charlize thinks the world of him. It's early day but they're very fond of each other".
Eric, who won an Emmy award today for his role as gay dad Cameron Tucker on Modern Family, recently broke up with long-time girlfriend Katherine Tokarz.
Charlize and Eric were photographed posing together at the White House Correspondents Dinner in April (see above pic). Is she really going out with him?
Eric addressed the rumour in typically tongue-in-cheek style on Twitter today.
"I wish people would stop spreading rumors that Charlize Theron and I are dating," he wrote. "It's starting to make Halle Berry jealous."
Eric's rep stepped in to tell People magazine the truth.
"There is nothing romantic going on between them. He has only met Charlize twice!" Eric's rep said.
And here we were hoping they could form their very own modern family. There's still hope yet.
