Plugging her new autobiography Nowhere But Up, the 36-year-old single mum spoke about being the victim of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of a male babysitter and a friend's grandfather.
"I was full of shame," she said. "I've learned it's normal for anybody who's been through sexual abuse to carry that shame and blame and feel like there's something wrong with you. I definitely carried that."
By 14 Pattie was abusing drugs and alcohol. By 15 she had lost her virginity and at age 17 she threw herself in front of a moving truck in an attempt to end her life.
"It was a culmination built up over the years of the abuse and the pain," she said. "At the time I was messed up with drugs and alcohol and in a depression."
Pattie found God while she was recovering in hospital, then found yet another reason to live when she fell pregnant to her boyfriend Jeremy Bieber a few months later.
She says some people advised her to get an abortion, but it was never something she considered.
"I just knew I couldn't," she said. "I just knew I had to keep him. I didn't know how I was going to do it. But I just knew that I couldn't abort. I had to do my best, and I was determined to do whatever it took."
Pattie gave birth to baby Justin when she was 18, and she says her superstar son has been singing since the moment he entered the world.
"I know this sounds crazy, but it sounded like he was singing. He did!' said Pattie.
"As soon as she heard him cry, 'I was like, 'Oh my gosh, it is so precious and amazing. I just want to squeeze him'," she said.
