The singer has revealed he assumed his homosexuality was "common knowledge" before admitting he was gay to Rolling Stone magazine in 1976.
In an interview with US Today show's Matt Lauer, the father-of-one claims he never tried to hide his preference for men. In fact, he was waiting to be asked.
"[When journalist Cliff Jahr asked me] I said, 'I've been waiting for people to ask me this. It's not exactly a secret. I live with my manager. I'm openly gay outside. I don't have a girlfriend. And nobody's ever actually out — I just thought it was common knowledge," he revealed during the interview.
The 65-year-old currently lives with his partner of 17 years David Furnish and their son Zachary, who was born to a surrogate mother in 2010.
